Food Insecurity – From The Dustbowl To Today

October 6, 2020 By Eve Yearwood

Two For A Penny
My book with lyrics, artwork and sheet music is free to download.
The song by Kris Kristofferson is free to listen to on YouTube.

In school students learn about the hardships endured during The Great Depression, especially the the thousands of families going hungry after losing their farms and their livelihood. Many American farmers and sharecroppers in the central states, The Dustbowl area –  Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Texas, experienced a years long drought, lost their farms and migrated to California looking for work picking fruits and vegetables just to make enough money to eat.

Now during this Coronavirus pandemic where many people are still out of work, families are again feeling the pain of food insecurity. Lines are long at food banks across the country. Having students make sense of this by understanding our history brings a higher level of understanding.

Normally during this time of Harvest and Thanksgiving schools have canned food drives. This is an easy way for children to be part of contributing to their community food bank as cans of soup and vegetables are inexpensive ways to contribute. Now it’s hard to even bring up as so many families are struggling. I urge everyone who can to let your child take a can of food to a local collection site to help them be a part of making someone’s life a little easier during these trying times. Students enjoy doing a random act of kindness. In this case, helping a family eat.

Hope During Troubling Times

September 28, 2020 By Eve Yearwood

Rainbow Book Cover

I am becoming increasingly alarmed about the mental health of students during this pandemic. They are going through struggles that are hard for us to wrap our heads around. This song, “Here Comes That Rainbow Again” can help students immediately feel more comforted listening to the music and lyrics. Even more so when they realize that the song is based on a time in American history during The Great Depression. You can download the book for free here.

The song is free to listen to on YouTube.

I took the lyrics to Kris Kristofferson’s song which are based on a scene from John Steinbeck’s novel, “The Grapes of Wrath,” added corresponding paintings by artist Robin E. Cook and devised a lesson for all ages too fully understand its impact. Everything is included–the sheet music, the curriculum encompassing lesson and all the activities that everyone can do and anyone can teach. The critical thinking skills and literary techniques that are easily learned help students not fall behind. I want students to feel smart and to feel hopeful. All the extras are free on YouTube. I have taught this for over 20 years and I cannot encourage it enough, especially now. It helps. I know.
